The Solo Traveler's
Packing Guide

Pack light, pack smart — everything you need to know about what to bring, what to leave, and how to do it all in a carry-on.

Philosophy

Pack Half of What You Think You Need

The golden rule of solo travel packing: lay out everything you think you need, then put half of it back. The most common regret solo travelers report is bringing too much, never too little.

Everything on your list should answer "yes" to at least two of these questions: Do I need it for safety? Will I use it every 2–3 days? Can I buy it locally if needed? Can it serve multiple purposes?

The lighter your pack, the faster you move, the less you pay in baggage fees, the more spontaneous you can be — and the less physical strain you carry through airports, train stations, and cobblestone streets.

Pro tip: For any trip under 3 weeks, challenge yourself to pack carry-on only. One main bag (40–45L) and one day bag is all you need — for almost any destination on earth.

Pro Tips

Pack Like a Pro

Hard-won packing wisdom from solo travelers with hundreds of thousands of miles between them.

The Roll Method

Roll clothes instead of folding to save 30% of space and reduce wrinkles. Use compression packing cubes for bulkier items.

The 5-4-3-2-1 Rule

5 socks & underwear, 4 tops, 3 bottoms, 2 shoes, 1 jacket. Works for most 1–3 week trips in most climates.

Leave Room

Pack your bag 80% full. The other 20% is for things you buy, items you add, and for when everything gets slightly damp and expands.

Wear Your Heaviest

Wear your heaviest shoes, jacket, and carry your laptop in your hands at the airport to stay under bag weight limits.
