We're a small team of passionate solo travelers who believe that journeying alone is one of the most powerful things a person can do.
"I quit my job, bought a one-way ticket to Tokyo, and had absolutely no idea what I was doing — and that was the best decision of my life."
Solotravel was founded in 2019 by Yuki Tanaka, who had just completed 14 months of solo travel across 34 countries. Returning to Tokyo, she couldn't find a resource that felt honest, practical, and genuinely written by someone who'd actually done it — so she built one.
What began as a personal blog quickly grew into a platform serving tens of thousands of solo travelers monthly. Today, Solotravel is a dedicated team of writers, researchers, and active travelers operating from our Tokyo base, with contributors across every continent.
We're independent, reader-supported, and have no undisclosed partnerships with hotels or tour operators. Everything we recommend, we've personally experienced or rigorously researched.

We don't sell the fantasy of solo travel — we show both the wonder and the hard days. Real information from real experiences, not curated perfection.
We take safety seriously without using it as a tool to discourage. Our guides are practical, evidence-based, and designed to empower — not to frighten.
Solo travel looks different for everyone. We actively feature perspectives from travelers across genders, ages, ethnicities, and abilities — because everyone belongs on the road.
We promote slow travel, support local economies, and are committed to reducing the environmental and social impact of tourism in every destination we cover.
The travel landscape changes constantly. We update our guides regularly, listen to community feedback, and never assume we know everything.
The solo travel community is one of the most generous and supportive communities in the world. We're here to facilitate those connections.
